Trading

Position size

Size an example trade from how much of the account you are willing to lose if the stop is hit. The share count is dollar risk divided by the distance from entry to stop.

Trading

R-multiple

Expectancy is the average result of one trade measured in R. Breakeven win rate is the hit rate that makes expectancy zero for your average win and loss.

Investing

Compound growth

Grow a starting balance with a constant annual rate and an optional monthly contribution. The contribution compounds at the same monthly rate.

Investing

Inflation and real return

A 7% nominal gain is not a 7% gain in buying power if prices rose. This converts a constant nominal return into an approximate real return.

Personal finance

Emergency fund

Multiply essential monthly bills by the number of months you want covered. The weekly set-aside is that target spread over one year.

Personal finance

Debt payoff

One fixed-rate loan, one monthly payment, plus an optional extra amount. If the payment does not cover interest, the balance would grow.

Investing

Fee drag

Hold the same starting amount and the same constant gross return. Subtract two different annual fees and compare the ending values.

Personal finance

Mortgage payment

A standard fixed-rate amortization. Payment, total cash out, and interest are for principal and rate only — not tax, insurance, or PMI.
